Will Sanju Samson play India's Asia Cup 2025 opener against UAE? Suryakumar Yadav drops hint
The T20I captain of the Indian cricket team, Suryakumar Yadav, has dropped a vital hint on whether Sanju Samson will feature in the opening clash of the Blue Brigade during Asia Cup against the UAE on September 10.

Going into the opening clash of the Indian side during the 2025 season of the Asia Cup against the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on September 10 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, the biggest question has been around the selection of their veteran wicket-keeper batter, Sanju Samson, as the captain, Suryakumar Yadav, has offered a witty response.
Sanju Samson’s spot has been under scrutiny following the return of the current red-ball captain and the vice-captain of the competition, Shubman Gill, who is expected to open the batting with Abhishek Sharma. Despite his conditions at the top order, Samson is expected to miss out with Jitesh Sharma coming in the lower order, as BCCI chief selector, Ajit Agarkar, provided a debating comment.

“Sir, I shall message you the playing XI. But yes, we are really taking good care of him, and don’t worry, we shall make the right decision.” Suryakumar, the T20I captain of the Blue Brigade, expressed his thoughts in the captain’s meeting as he smiled at the reporter after offering the answer.
Suryakumar Yadav gives update on Sanju Samson’s position against UAE
The 30-year-old right-handed batter, Sanju Samson, has smashed 861 runs in 38 innings of the T20Is at an average of 25.32 and a strike rate of 152.38 with the help of three centuries and two half-centuries at the best score of 111. But he couldn’t do well in the five-match home T20I series against England, and that grew concern among the management.
This issue continued in the IPL for the Rajasthan Royals, where he was the injury cloud. In nine innings, he scored 285 runs at an average of around 36 and a strike rate of over 140 with just one half-century. If Samson plays, he is anticipated to be part of the top order, and in that case, Tilak Verma is likely to miss out at number three.
Suryakumar has kept his cards open regarding any big decision on the playing eleven. If they still want to continue with Samson-Abhishek opening stand, then Gill can bat at number three. After the UAE clash, India will shift their focus to the mouth-watering game against Pakistan in Dubai on September 14.
