After winning, he retired from T20Is and was later named brand ambassador for the 2026 T20 World Cup by the ICC. He was present at the venue for India’s opening match as the defending champions.

Indian World Cup-winning captain Rohit Sharma, who is also the brand ambassador of the 2026 T20 World Cup, walked out with the trophy at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The Hitman unveiled the silverware with ICC President Jay Shah ahead of India’s clash with the USA on Saturday, February 7.

The Hitman of Indian Cricket also spoke with his former teammate Yuzvendra Chahal and current captain Suryakumar Yadav before the toss. He then walked out to fireworks and loud chants of “Rohit, Rohit” from the home crowd while carrying the trophy onto the ground.

The opening batter recently played in the ODI series against New Zealand. He is now on a break, with his next match coming in the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) for the Mumbai Indians (MI).

India Put Into Bat First Against USA
USA captain Monank Patel won the toss and chose to bowl first at the Wankhede Stadium. India’s captain Suryakumar Yadav said he was planning to bat first anyway. Mohammad Siraj was included in the playing XI in place of Jasprit Bumrah, who is ill.
“We would have batted first anyway. Played a lot here and know these conditions well, so I don’t think there will be much dew,” Yadav told Ravi Shastri at the toss.
Team India wants to start their World Cup campaign strongly and get early points on the board. On the opening day, Pakistan and the West Indies also won their matches against the Netherlands and Scotland.
