Mohammed Siraj had a moment to forget on Day 4 of the ongoing fifth and final Test between India and England at the Oval. In the 35th over of England’s chase, Prasidh Krishna bowled a short delivery to Harry Brook, who attempted a pull shot but top-edged it high into the air. As the ball was falling slowly, Prasidh was already halfway through his celebration dance; he was sure that it would be a simple wicket.

Siraj, who was at long leg, read the ball well and took the catch without any trouble. But, just after taking the ball, he took a step back and accidentally touched the boundary cushion with his foot. The joy quickly turned into disbelief in the Indian camp as the on-field umpire signaled six instead of a wicket. Siraj immediately covered his face in frustration, realizing that he had given Brook a crucial lifeline in a high-pressure situation.

The error stunned Prasidh Krishna and his teammates, who were looking for a breakthrough to derail England’s chase. At the time of writing, England was 164/3 in 38 overs at Lunch on Day 4, with Harry Brook unbeaten on 38 off 30 balls and Joe Root steady on 23 off 46 deliveries.
Akash Deep had bowled 13 overs without a wicket, conceding 44 runs.

England Build Steadily After Siraj's Missed Opportunity

The momentum shifted slightly in England's favor after the six, as Brook and Root began to stitch together a crucial partnership. With a target in sight and wickets in hand, India will need to strike back quickly in the second session.
