India’s middle order didn’t enjoy their time during the fourth T20I of the five-match series against Australia at the Carra Oval in Gold Coast. After a decent opening stand of 56 runs between Abhishek Sharma and Shubman Gill, the Blue Brigade found it hard to collect runs against the change of pace of Australia’s bowlers, which restricted the visitors to only 167 in their allotted 20 overs.

Chasing the target wouldn’t be an easy job for the Aussies, who needed to gather quick runs inside the powerplay, and the two openers, Mitchell Marsh and Matthew Short, looked to nail the big shots around the park. The latter was especially in better touch than the captain, with two boundaries and two sixes.

But Axar Patel had the last laugh as the left-arm spinner drew first blood for the Indian side with the wicket of Short, who swept the angled in spinning delivery from the left-arm spinner. The umpire didn’t raise his finger, but a successful review from the bowler, wicket-keeper, and captain Suryakumar Yadav brought joy to the Indian side.

The home side made four changes in their eleven as Adam Zampa, on his return to the playing XI having missed the first three games due to personal reasons, picked up three wickets with the ball. Glenn Maxwell also returned to the eleven after recovering from his wrist injury, while Short’s opening slot selection was confirmed due to Travis Head’s absence.

Apart from Zampa, Nathan Ellis was exceptional with the ball as he picked up three wickets for 21 runs in three overs. Axar, meanwhile, along with his opening wicket of Short, also sent back Josh Inglis for 12 runs. India needed that victory to put the brakes on the innings.

Australia had over 65 runs in nine overs and needed one good over to put themselves in a good shape. For India, it was about drying the runs and picking wickets throughout the innings.
