London Spirit began their Hundred campaign in style, beating Oval Invincibles by 17 runs at Lord’s. Grace Harris was the hero, smashing 89 runs from just 42 balls to give the defending champions a perfect start in front of more than 15,000 fans. Harris played a fearless knock, hitting seven fours and six huge sixes. She got good support from Cordelia Griffith, who made her first ever fifty in the Hundred from 29 balls. Together, they put on a 100‑run stand that lifted Spirit to 176 for 5 the second‑highest total in the history of the women’s competition.

Grace Harris powers London Spirit to winning start in the Hundred

Chasing a big target, Oval Invincibles relied heavily on Meg Lanning. The Australian star, who was overlooked by Spirit in the draft, played a brilliant innings of 85 from 51 balls. She kept her team in the hunt until she was dismissed, after which the chase started to fade. Marizanne Kapp and Alice Capsey hit a few quick runs, but it wasn’t enough as Invincibles ended on 159 for 4.

For Spirit, Issy Wong and Tara Norris bowled well, taking important wickets at the right time. Tash Farrant also had reason to celebrate as she claimed her first wicket in the competition in almost four years after battling injury. This win was extra special for Spirit as they were without last year’s captain, Heather Knight.

It also gave them early bragging rights over their London rivals. Speaking after the match, Harris said she just wanted to make the most of the good batting conditions. “It’s always great to start with a win, especially against our local rivals,” she said. “It felt good out there and I’m happy I could help the team.”
