The star middle-order batter of the Indian side, Shreyas Iyer, who had an exceptional Indian Premier League (IPL), leading the Punjab Kings (PBKS) to end as the runners-up, is likely to return to the shortest and longest formats of the national side. The last 20-over international clash of Iyer’s 51-match career came nearly 18 months ago against Australia in Bengaluru.

The recent reports of the Times of India (TOI) have revealed that the Mumbai-born will be back in the side during the upcoming Asia Cup 2025 and the home Test series against the West Indies and South Africa. He was in red-hot form during the IPL 2025, joining the franchise for INR 26.75 crore and collecting 604 runs in 17 innings at a strike rate of 175.07 with six half-centuries.

“We need Iyer’s class and experience in the middle order in all formats. It’s something which we missed in England during the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. The selectors are aware that Iyer is an excellent player of spin bowling, which will be crucial in a home season that involves four Tests — two each against the West Indies and South Africa.The reports of TOI claimed.

Overall, in his 47 T20I innings, the right-handed batter drilled 1104 runs at an average of just over 30 and a strike rate of 136.12, thanks to eight fifties at the best score of unbeaten 74 runs. In the longest format, the 30-year-old has struggled to find consistency with 811 runs in 24 innings at an average of 36.86 with five fifties and one century.

On his red-ball debut, he played an incredible knock of 105 runs in 171 deliveries during the first innings against New Zealand. He carried the momentum of the knock in the second innings and smashed 65 runs in 125 balls to bag the Player of the Match award.

Despite being out of the side in two formats, Shreyas is a vital member in ODIs, having finished as the second leading run getter of the Champions Trophy 2025. He managed 243 runs in five innings during India’s title-winning campaign in Dubai.
