Former India batting coach Sanjay Bangar has supported the inclusion of left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav in India’s playing XI for the first Test against South Africa. The match will start on Friday, November 14, at Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

On Thursday, November 13, during a discussion on ESPNcricinfo, Bangar was asked if Kuldeep would play in the Test. He said: “He (Kuldeep Yadav) should definitely be in the team because he has always played very well. Don’t think too much about the New Zealand series. When India plays at home, there are usually two finger spinners and one wrist spinner. Having this option is always good. For me, Kuldeep Yadav is a definite pick in the playing XI.”

Kuldeep Yadav’s Strong Form

During India’s last home two-match series against the West Indies, where India won 2-0, Kuldeep Yadav was the leading wicket-taker. He took 12 wickets in four innings. Overall, the 30-year-old has played 15 Tests, taking 68 wickets at an average of 21.69 and a strike rate of 36.9, including five five-wicket hauls.

India Likely to Go with Two Seamers

Sanjay Bangar predicted that India will play with two seamers and three spinners in the first Test against South Africa. He said: “I think India will go with just two seamers because the pitch has black soil. The ball grips and turns a bit here, and it comes slightly slower off the pitch. Still, you want two fast bowlers because in Kolkata, mornings and evenings are cooler, which gives normal swing. In the afternoon, there can also be reverse swing.

Both Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj can use these conditions well. The spinners will also play a big role in the middle sessions. So, three spinners and two seamers is the best bowling combination for India.”

This series will be South Africa’s first Test tour of India since 2019, when they lost all three matches 3-0.
