When Rohit Sharma hung up his shoes in the longest format, India’s search for he next red-ball captain began as only a few candidates are available to take up the role. Jasprit Bumrah, the premier pacer, had issues with his fitness and can miss red-ball games. That’s why the choice was between Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant.
The selection committee of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) decided to go with the Punjab-born Pant, who was ignored for the highly prestigious position. The wicket-keeper batter is a huge match-winner and a face that he has proven time and again in the five-day formats of the game.

When it was informed that the team would need to move on from Kohli and Rohit, Pant was quick to turn it down, which cost him the red-ball leadership. On the other hand, Shubman agreed on the decision. When the final decision was made, the youngster didn’t have a good outing.
Pant, the 27-year-old, has smashed an overall 3427 runs in 82 innings at the Test average of 44.50 and a strike rate of 74.16, thanks to 18 half-centuries and eight centuries at the best score of unbeaten 159 runs. The left-handed batter drilled two centuries during the opening Leeds Test before bagging two fifties at Lord’s and Manchester.
India had a fabulous time under Gill in England as they were able to draw the five-match series 2-2, post the victory during the fifth and final encounter at the Kennington Oval in South London. Pant didn’t feature in the last Test after he broke his foot and got ruled out of the clash. The next red-ball series for the national team will be in October at home against the West Indies.
