The man who scored a record number of hundreds and half centuries had to wait for a long time to register in the first century in the One Day International format. Sachin Tendulkar scored his first ODI ton on September 9, 1994, during a match against Australia in Colombo.

In his 78th ODI, a Singer World Series day-nighter against Australia at Colombo's Premadasa Stadium, he hit 110 in 130 deliveries. Sachin made his ODI debut for India back in December 1989 and got his first century in the format in the year 1994. After that, he scored a total of 49 hundreds in 463 One Day International matches, including an unbeaten 200-run knock.

In that landmark match of Tendulkar's career, India won by 31 runs against Australia. Batting first, India scored 246 runs for 8 wickets in 50 overs. Sachin scored 110, the highest individual run in the match for India. Vinod Kambli's 43 not out against 47 balls was the second best of the evening. Craig McDermott and Shane Warne claimed a brace each. Australian bowlers did well, but not better than the Indian bowling department. Manoj Prabhakar and Rajesh Chauhan bagged 3 wickets and 2 wickets, respectively. Kapil Dev knocked down the wicket of Michael Slater.

A win based on pure team effort

The Australian batting lineup fell apart while they were chasing a target of 247 runs in 50 overs, and India won the game by 31 with the centurion Sachin Tendulkar as the best performer of the match.

For Australia, Mark Waugh was the highest run getter, as he scored 61 runs against 81 deliveries. David Boon went back to the pavilion after scoring 40 runs. Due to India's dominating bowling performance, the Aussies were never in a position to stitch a sustainable partnership in the middle to chase down the target.
