English star Joe Root scored another strong century that has put the hosts England in a commanding position in the Manchester Test against India. With his latest century, Root broke some top records in Test cricket. 

While England are leading the five-match home Test series (Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025) by 2-1 before the fourth Test at Old Trafford in Manchester, England bowled out the visitors for 358 runs in the first innings of the Manchester Test after sending them to bat first. In reply, the top four English batters scored 70+ runs, while Joe Root scored his 38th Test century. 

Joe Root completed his 38th Test century in 178 balls

The 34-year-old Root completed his latest Test century in 178 balls. It was his second back-to-back Test match century, as he scored 104 runs in the first innings of the Lord's Test. At tea on the third day of the Manchester Test, Root was not out at 121 runs off 201 balls with 13 fours, and England were batting at 433/4 with a lead of 75 runs.

Here are some crucial stats of Joe Root's Manchester Test century

  • With his 38th Test century, Root recorded the joint fourth-most Test centuries, equalling the record of legendary Sri Lankan cricketer Kumar Sangakkara (38 Test centuries). The top three names in this list are Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar (51 Test centuries), South African cricketer Jacques Kallis (45 Test centuries), and Australian cricketer Ricky Ponting (41 Test centuries). 
  • With his 23rd home Test century, Root recorded the joint most Test centuries at home, equalling the record of Sri Lankan Mahela Jayawardene, South African Jacques Kallis, and Australian Ricky Ponting. 
  • With his ninth Test century against India at home, Root records the most Test centuries against one team at home. The previous record was the Australian legend Sir Don Bradman's eight Test centuries against England in Australia. 
  • With his 12th Test century against India, Root sets a new record for most Test centuries against India, by surpassing Australian Steven Smith's 11 Test centuries against India. Root became the fifth batter to record at least 12 Test centuries against a single team.
