India will be without their premier pacer, Jasprit Bumrah, who is going to miss the opening T20 World Cup 2026 opening encounter against the United States of America (USA) at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Colombo. He has picked up a viral fever, as the reports claimed that Bumrah will be given rest by the team management and will not be rushed for the campaign opener.
This means that the Indian side will have just 13 fit players for the game. Injured Washington Sundar hasn’t joined the national side yet. He is still present at the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, waiting for the final fitness clearance. On the eve of the game, Bumrah didn’t even train.

India has already faced another injury status with Harshit Rana being ruled out for the entire competition with a knee injury that he picked up during the warm-up contest against South Africa at the DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai, and he didn’t look in a good rhythm for the one over he bowled and conceded 16 runs.
Mohammad Siraj set to replace Jasprit Bumrah in IND vs USA T20 WC 2026 clash
In that position, the BCCI decided to bring in Mohammad Siraj at the eleventh hour, who joined the national side in Mumbai late on February 06 and is expected to be part of the playing XI straightaway, sharing the new ball with Arshdeep Singh, which will be a massive turn of events for the Hyderabad-born.
“Following consultations with a specialist and subsequent scans, the BCCI medical team deemed him unfit to participate in the tournament. The team management wishes him a speedy recovery. Mohd. Siraj will join the team as Harshit’s replacement in the squad.” The BCCI revealed in a press statement.
Ishan Kishan is also likely to open the batting with Abhishek Sharma, post his 53 runs during the warm-up contest against the Proteas as an opener. He also managed 103 runs as one drop against New Zealand during the fifth and final T20I in Trivandrum. Sanju Samson didn’t train for the entire practice session in Mumbai, and that was a clear indication.
