The Bangladesh Cricket Board’s (BCB) Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) has adopted a strict zero-tolerance policy during this year’s Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) to safeguard the tournament’s integrity. While the initiative aims to curb corruption, it has reportedly caused unease among some foreign players, most notably Afghanistan wicketkeeper-batter Rahmanullah Gurbaz, who is representing Dhaka Capitals.

Ahead of the tournament, around 10 players were barred from participating in the auction due to suspected involvement in past match-fixing incidents, with Anamul Haque among those named. Despite criticism and complaints from certain quarters, the BCB has remained firm in its stance, stating that these measures are essential to maintaining transparency. According to the board, the stricter monitoring has resulted in an almost 80 percent reduction in suspicious activities in recent times.

Responding to concerns, the BCB clarified that no player’s rights were compromised and emphasised that all actions were taken in accordance with ICC anti-corruption guidelines. However, the issue has continued to generate discussion, particularly after reports suggested that Gurbaz felt uncomfortable under the heightened scrutiny and even considered leaving Bangladesh midway through the tournament.

Growing Tensions in the BPL

Meanwhile, Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Amir, who was expected to play the full season of this year’s Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) for Sylhet Titans, has left the tournament midway and returned to Pakistan. Sylhet Titans confirmed the news in an official statement, without sharing further details.

Mithun Speaks on Gurbaz Situation

Dhaka captain Mohammad Mithun addressed the issue after his team’s defeat to Noakhali Express on January 11. He admitted that off-field matters have affected the squad and said Rahmanullah Gurbaz has been mentally disturbed. Mithun explained that Gurbaz, a player with experience across major leagues, took the situation very seriously, and his mental state has had an impact on the entire team.

Mithun added that while the team has offered emotional support, the matter ultimately depends on the player. He also confirmed that Gurbaz had considered leaving the tournament and was following instructions from his own board before the issue was later settled. A franchise owner also raised concerns, saying financial losses and ongoing off-field pressure are making it difficult to operate. Once again, the Bangladesh Premier League finds itself in the spotlight for the wrong reasons.
