The match highlighted how India are shaping up as a more flexible and confident T20 side. The victory was highlighted by a historic run chase, led by captain Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan, that showcased India’s growing dominance in the shortest format of the game.

Here, we look at three positives for India after emphatic win against New Zealand in 2nd T20:

1.   Aggressive yet stable batting from all batters

Ishan Kishan in 2nd T20I vs New ZealandIndia’s batting lineup looked balanced and confident, even though India’s openers, Abhishek (golden duck) and Samson (6 runs), failed to make an impact, the rest of the batting lineup stepped up brilliantly. The middle order played with aggressive intent, taking the game deep and maintained a strike rate of 200+. Their ability to rotate strike, build partnerships, and accelerate when needed showed balance, resilience, and confidence which is a clear positive for India ahead of the T20 World Cup.

In the two T20 matches so far, India has shown impressive batting depth and adaptability. In the first match, they batted first, and in the second, they chased, yet in both games, the team crossed the 200-run mark. This highlights not just their ability to score quickly, but also their consistency under different match situations. It’s a clear sign that India’s batters can maintain aggressive intent without compromising stability, making the lineup a major positive heading into the T20 World Cup.

2.   Suryakumar yadav back in form

Suryakumar Yadav in 2nd T20I

Suryakumar Yadav, leading the side, anchored the chase with an unbeaten 82 off 37 balls, before his impactful knock in the second T20 against New Zealand, Suryakumar Yadav had been going through a rare lean phase. In 2025, India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav experienced a challenging year, finishing without a single fifty in 21 T20I innings, scoring 218 runs at a low average of 13.62 and a strike rate of 123.16. His highest score was 47*.

Even though Suryakumar Yadav led India to victory in the Asia Cup, his personal performance in that tournament was not up to the mark. Across 6 innings, he scored just 72 runs, with an average of 18 with a strike rate of 101.40. For a player of Surya’s caliber, these numbers highlighted a rare struggle with timing and rhythm. The first T20 against New Zealand showed the first signs of Surya regaining his rhythm. He looked sharper, timed the ball better and scored 33 off 22 balls at a strike rate of 145. Now that Surya is back in form and the T20 World Cup is just a few days away, India look like favorites to win the cup.

3.  Varun and Kuldeep: India’s spin duo in top form

Kuldeep Yadav and Suryakumar Yadav

India’s spinners, Varun Chakaravarthy and Kuldeep Yadav, have been exceptional in the two T20s so far. The duo bowled tight lines, took key wickets, and controlled the middle overs, not allowing New Zealand’s batters to settle. Their variations, flight, and pace changes created pressure, built dot-ball sequences, and helped India maintain momentum in crucial phases. With this spin pair firing, India’s bowling attack looks balanced and dangerous heading into the T20 World Cup.

If we consider their last five matches, the duo has already taken 11 wickets, highlighting their consistency and match-winning ability. Both of them bowl mainly between overs 7–15, India’s spinners ensured the run rate didn’t explode, both bowlers picked wickets that halted New Zealand’s acceleration. India’s batting may have grabbed the spotlight, but the spin duo of Varun and Kuldeep quietly laid the foundation for victory. Their ability to combine control with wicket-taking will make Indian team more dangerous.
